Breaking to be Born by Angela Impson
You can walk me across a stage and hand me a piece of paper,
But I have not graduated.
I am growing.
Plant me in fertile soil.
Soaked seedlings saturated in birth and new beginnings.
I haven’t even broken through the earth yet,
But, in hope, still I stand tall.
Shelter me in sunlight.
Let the warmth of your biggest star give me rays of strength.
I am breaking open in blooms,
But, in hope, still I stand tall.
Let me wither away.
So thirsty for a thousand other days but today.
I am breaking down,
But, in hope, still I stand tall.
This ending will not be the death of me.
I am never not breaking,
But continuously breaking to be born.
Hold a candlelight to my pages.
Recycled words I speak from my untethered heart:
I am gradual.
I
Am
Graduating.
