Malidoma Somé sits down with Waylon Lewis of Elephant Journal
Malidoma Patrice Somé was kidnapped by Jesuit missionaries and raised in a Christian boarding school where he received a Western education. At the age of twenty, Somé ran away from the missionary school. By then he had forgotten his native language. In order to reconnect with his people, he underwent a process of what he called “relearning,” eventually undergoing a month long “initiation process.” Somé holds three Master’s degrees and two doctorates and has taught at multiple Western universities, including the University of Michigan.
