Anna Man had an office in the administration building and one in the activity building at the Center.
The administration building was located at the entrance of the property and the activity building was located at the main compound. Robert and Drake enter the activity building, passing through the main room to a hallway that leads to Anna’s office.
Robert enters the office, announcing, “Anna, Drake is here.”
Anna turns toward the entry way door and smiles, “Oh my God! Drake, how are you?”
Drake smiles big and hugs Anna, “I do well; just a little bored with life.”
Anna puts her hand on his face tenderly, “I was so sorry to hear about your mother.”
Drake takes a slow breath, “Thank you. It was just her time.”
Robert breaks into to the conversation, “Drake is a full-time college student and has come looking for a part-time job. I told him we had discussed him working with us part time, teaching the kids the 12 steps. But you wanted to see him before you made up your mind.”
Anna shakes her head, “Oh, Drake, you would not believe what’s happening. An ex-employee, one of our counselors, who we let go has filed a complaint with the Department of State and Health Services against Ellen. She is accusing Ellen of verbally abusing the clients. So we have to go through an investigation. It is a nightmare. But our short-term problem is that this is leaving us shorthanded, because Ellen can’t go into groups while this is happening. I need support for the clinical staff that is doing groups.”
Robert, standing behind Anna, frowns and nods at Drake.
Drake offers, “Well, I could…do some…step work with the…. clients, Anna. I have thoughts on what I could do. And it sounds like you could use a little loyalty.”
Anna, with her head perched in her right hand, her left hand holding her elbow, looks up suddenly at Drake and says, “Yes, that would be perfect. Loyal you were, Drake. When can you start?”
Drake, a little shocked, replies, “Ahhhh, Monday afternoon. I can only do part-time though, I have classes in the mornings.”
Anna smiles, “Great, we’ll see you Monday at one.” She turns back to her computer and proceeds as if they were no longer there.
Robert and Drake exit the AC offices and step on to the staff-only porch, where they find Mike smoking a cigarette.
Mike looks at Drake and with no emotion says, “Fuck you.”
Drake nods, “Michael.”
Mike laughs, “How the fuck are you, you evil motherfucker?”
Drake grins, “I was well but now I am here looking at you, so things have made a turn for the worse.”
“So, I will be seeing you every day?”
Drake shrugs, “Looks that way.”
“I can’t fucking believe you are taking the job.”
Drake smirks, “I owe the Mans.”
Mike, tilting his head slightly back with palms up asks, “Loyalty?”
Drake stares at the stairs leading out to the grounds, “Moral imperative…War.”
Mike laughs, “Call of the battle is it?”
Drake says in a distant flat tone, “The call is constant Michael.”
Mike frowns, saying, “Its Mike, and I can see you are as positive as ever.”
Drake, still staring at the stairs to the ground, says, “Thank you Michael, nice of you to notice.”
Mike still, frowning, looks at Robert saying, “That’s sarcasm you prick.”
Drake walks down the steps saying, “Dude, you need to relax…I’ll see ya’ll Monday.”
Robert shouts at him, “1 pm Drake.”
Drake replies without looking, “Yeah, so the Old Lady said.”
Mike flustered, “Nobody calls me Michael, except him. You didn’t tell him did you?
Robert smiles and answers, “He didn’t ask and I didn’t tell”.
Mike, closing his eyes, raising his left hand to his mouth and laughing, “He is going to blow a fuse, dude. He is so going to quit.”
Robert says, “He won’t quit, because I already have his agreement.”
Mike, still laughing, quietly says, “I take it back, he isn’t going to quit, he is going to murder you.”
Robert grins saying, “That’s nothing, Ellen gets back tomorrow.”
Mike bent over laughing says between breaths, “Oh my God, I can’t wait till she sees him.”
