How to Undermine Progress 101: The Union of Forgetfulness & Haste
State Senator Barrow Peacock of Bossier City has authored SB485, a bill that would require that all municipal employment laws match state employment laws. This means that municipal ordinances that shield LGBT people from workplace discrimination would no longer be protected. In his “haste” to ensure consistency at the state and municipal level it appears that Senator Peacock “forgot” that LGBT citizens are not protected from workplace discrimination at the state level.
SB485 would effectively nullify the Shreveport Fairness Ordinance, an ordinance supported by 6 of the 7 Shreveport City Council members, and both of Shreveport’s Chambers of Commerce. The Shreveport Fairness Ordinance protects those working in the City of Shreveport from being fired because of their sexual orientation or gender identity.
