“She-roes: Celebrating Female Role Models”

On Saturday, September 27th, Hope Medical Group for Women is hosting the first of what many hope will become an annual event as part of Lady Parts Justice.

V to Shining V 2014 has the goal of celebrating women and encouraging voters to pay attention to candidates’ positions in regards to reproductive rights, which include the following:

  • Plan the number and timing of their pregnancies;
  • Access abortion when women think it is for the best;
  • Access affordable contraceptive of the individual’s choice.

Co-sponsored by Choice Louisiana, Hope Medical Group for Women, and the Shreveport-Bossier Chapter of NOW (National Organization for Women), V to Shining V is a nationwide event. With three parties scheduled for New Orleans, this is one that will spotlight its local sponsors and push for greater and more in-depth attention to the many issues facing women all over our country and the world.

The overall concept of Lady Parts Justice is a movement that utilizes comedy, social media, and adult beverages (pizza and beer will be served to attendees on Saturday night) to get the message out that the lady parts of women are off-limits to politicians. According to event organizers, the movement strives to identify elected officials who have a record of eroding women’s reproductive rights by passing legislation that the politicians consider “for [women's] own good.”

In Louisiana alone for the past several years, state legislators have passed laws that restrict access to abortion. The laws, report organizers of this event, have no scientific basis. Furthermore, they are contrary to recommendations by the American Medical Association (AMA) and the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG).

One of the activities planned for Saturday night is to have score cards passed out to grade elected officials on how they rate in relation to the many issues facing women and their reproductive rights today.

Choice Louisiana, one of the evening’s sponsors, is a coalition of individuals and organizations in Louisiana that is dedicated to defending a woman’s right to choose. Choice Louisiana believes that women are capable of making sound decisions regarding their own health care — its mission is to preserve all options of reproductive choice.

Beginning at 7:00 and continuing for an as-yet-undetermined time, V to Shining V 2014 is an event that is all gender-encompassing. Everyone with an interest in the preservation of women’s reproductive rights is encouraged to attend, and everyone attending is encouraged to dress for the party’s theme of “she-roes,” your favorite female role model.

About the author

Miles Jay Oliver is a guy who lives in the Anderson Island area with his terrier mix, Mary Louise. He'd prefer Highland, but he has better access to his family from where he is now. Miles and Mary Louise are both single. Miles drives a sunflower yellow Volkswagen named Lola (she formerly worked as a show girl at the Copacabana), and he makes his living as a clerk for a private law firm. The only thing Miles has ever wanted to do is write, and he’s enjoying the ability to do so with Henry Harbor and other local publications. When not working or writing, Miles loves to read, paint, and look to other creative forms of expression as outlets for the ideas that would drive him crazy if he didn't get them out on paper and canvas. He's an avid film buff and a true bibliophile. You can follow him on his blog, but he's been really bad at updating it since beginning to work with Henry Harbor. If you like what he's writing, let him know. If you don't like what he's writing, let him know why.
